RALEIGH 2

back to page 1

The majority of the pictures below have been kindly loaned by former cycle factory worker Terry Radford, who started at the Cycle Road 3-speed assembly shop as a youth in 1956. He knew my late father Harry Richards well, who looked after young Terry and the other apprentices in the factory. As you can see from the pictures below - Raleigh was a great place to work at that time.

The working week at that time was 44 hours, 7.30am-12.30am, then 1.30-5.30pm.
Terry got £1, 15 shillings for his first weeks work.

LIFTING THE HUB TRAY (above)

'Harry (Lofty's) favourite trick to us new starters was to hold a hub tray (which when full contained 20 hubs at 3.5lbs each, which would weigh 80lbs including the tray). Harry would put one hub in the far corner and hold the tray at the opposite end and lift the tray with one hand (very hard). He also used to show off and do it with 2 hubs!!
